What is GST in New Zealand?

Goods and Services Tax, or GST, is the tax added to most things you buy in New Zealand. A flat white in Ponsonby, a new set of tyres in Hamilton and a freelancer's invoice in Dunedin all carry it. The rate has been 15% since 1 October 2010, and it is collected by Inland Revenue (IRD).

Businesses do the collecting. A registered business adds GST to what it sells, then subtracts the GST it paid on its own costs, and sends the difference to IRD. Registration is compulsory once your turnover passes NZ$60,000 in any 12-month period. Below that, you can register if you like.

Because the numbers come up on every quote, receipt and invoice, a reliable GST calculator saves a lot of fiddly arithmetic. A good GST calculator New Zealand businesses can lean on should be quick, show its working and handle both directions: adding GST to a price and taking it back out. That is exactly what the GST Calculator NZ above does.

Current GST rates and what they cover

New Zealand has one main GST rate, plus a couple of special treatments. Here is the short version.

  • Standard rate, 15%: most goods and services, including food, clothing, electronics, trade work and professional fees.
  • Zero-rated, 0%: exported goods, many services supplied to overseas customers, and some land sales between registered parties. GST is charged at 0%, and the seller can usually still claim back the GST on their costs.
  • Exempt: financial services, residential rent and donated goods and services from non-profit bodies. No GST is charged, and the seller generally can't claim GST on the related costs.

Rates and rules can change, so confirm anything important on the official Inland Revenue pages at ird.govt.nz. Our NZ GST calculator lets you pick 15%, 0% or any custom rate, which is handy for checking an old invoice or comparing against a rate from another country.

One small history note: before October 2010 the rate was 12.5%, and it was lower again before that. If you are digging through paperwork from the 1990s or 2000s, use the custom rate option and the sums will still work.

GST inclusive vs GST exclusive prices

A GST-exclusive price is the amount before tax. A GST-inclusive price is the final amount with tax already inside it. Shop shelves and websites aimed at consumers show inclusive prices, because New Zealand's fair trading rules expect advertised consumer prices to include GST.

Trade and business quotes often go the other way. If an electrician says "two thousand plus GST", that is an exclusive price, and you'll be paying NZ$2,300 in the end. Mixing the two up is the most common slip in small-business bookkeeping, so always check which one you're looking at before you start.

Which mode should you pick? Match it to the number in front of you. Got a price before tax? Choose Add GST. Holding a receipt with the tax already in the total? Choose Remove GST.

How to calculate GST in NZ by adding it

If you're asking how to calculate GST NZ-style, start with the price before tax. Multiply it by 0.15 to get the GST, then add that to the original price. Or, in one step, multiply by 1.15 to get the total.

GST = price excl. GST × 0.15Total = price excl. GST × 1.15

People often ask how to calculate 15 GST in their head. Here's a trick: find 10% by moving the decimal point, halve that to get 5%, and add the two together. For NZ$80, 10% is NZ$8 and 5% is NZ$4, so the GST is NZ$12 and the total is NZ$92.

When you need an answer exact to the cent, the calculator above follows the same steps and rounds to two decimal places, the way an invoice would.

How to calculate GST exclusive: removing GST from a total

Receipts show the total, but your accounts need the amount before GST. Working backwards is where most mistakes happen, so slow down here.

Working backwards: how do you calculate GST from a total?

Divide the GST-inclusive total by 1.15. The answer is the price before GST. Subtract it from the total and what's left is the GST. There is also a shortcut: because 15 ÷ 115 reduces to 3/23, the GST inside any total is that total multiplied by 3 and divided by 23.

Price excl. GST = total ÷ 1.15GST = total − price excl. GST (or total × 3 ÷ 23)

Take a NZ$575 hardware bill. Divide by 1.15 and you get NZ$500 before GST, so NZ$75 of the bill is tax. Many people try taking 15% off the total instead. That gives NZ$488.75, which is wrong, because the 15% applies to the smaller pre-tax figure, not to the total.

So when somebody asks, how do you calculate GST from a total, the honest answer is: divide, don't subtract.

Knowing how to calculate GST exclusive figures from your receipts also keeps your records tidy when it's time to prepare a GST return.

Worked examples with real NZ prices

Here are some examples you can check against the calculator. Each one uses a price you might really see.

Example 1: adding GST to a design invoice

An Auckland graphic designer finishes a branding job and quotes NZ$1,850 plus GST. The GST is 1,850 × 0.15 = NZ$277.50. The client pays 1,850 + 277.50 = NZ$2,127.50.

Example 2: adding GST to equipment

A Wellington café owner is quoted NZ$2,400 plus GST for a second-hand grinder. This is how to calculate 15 GST on any equipment quote: multiply by 0.15, then add. The GST is NZ$360 and the total is NZ$2,760.

Example 3: removing GST from a trade invoice

A Christchurch plumber's invoice totals NZ$1,380. Divide by 1.15 to get NZ$1,200 before GST. The GST portion is NZ$180.

Example 4: a zero-rated export

A Marlborough exporter ships NZ$5,000 worth of honey to Singapore. At 0% the GST is NZ$0, and the total stays at NZ$5,000.

Example 5: a shelf price with cents

A shelf price of NZ$19.99 already includes GST. Then 19.99 ÷ 1.15 = 17.3826, which rounds to NZ$17.38. The GST is 19.99 − 17.38 = NZ$2.61.

Common GST mistakes to avoid

  1. Taking 15% off a GST-inclusive total. Divide by 1.15 instead.
  2. Not checking whether a quote is inclusive or exclusive. Ask, or read the small print.
  3. Rounding too early. Round at the end of each line, not halfway through, or you can end up a cent out.
  4. Charging GST when you aren't registered. Only GST-registered businesses can charge it.
  5. Treating zero-rated and exempt as the same thing. They aren't, and the rules for claiming back costs differ.
  6. Using an out-of-date rate. Older documents may use 12.5%, the rate before October 2010.

A ten-second check with an NZ GST calculator before you send an invoice can save an awkward email later.

Summary

GST in New Zealand is a flat 15% on most goods and services. To add it, multiply by 1.15. To remove it, divide by 1.15, and remember the 3/23 shortcut for the tax portion. If you remember how to calculate GST NZ-style, the rest is just care with inclusive and exclusive prices.

GST Calculator NZ: frequently asked questions

What is the GST rate in New Zealand?

The standard GST rate in New Zealand is 15%. It has applied since 1 October 2010 and covers most goods and services. Some supplies, such as exports, are zero-rated at 0%, while financial services and residential rent are exempt. Always confirm current rules on the Inland Revenue website before filing a return.

How do I add 15% GST to a price?

Multiply the price before GST by 1.15. For example, NZ$200 × 1.15 = NZ$230, so the GST is NZ$30. If you prefer two steps, multiply by 0.15 to get the GST, then add it to the original price. Both methods give the same answer, and the calculator above does it instantly.

How do you calculate GST from a total?

Divide the GST-inclusive total by 1.15 to get the price before GST, then subtract that figure from the total to find the GST. As a shortcut, multiply the total by 3 and divide by 23. For example, NZ$115 gives NZ$100 before GST and NZ$15 of tax.

What is the GST fraction in NZ?

The GST fraction is 3/23, which is simply 15/115 reduced. It tells you how much of a GST-inclusive amount is tax. A NZ$230 purchase contains NZ$30 of GST, because 230 × 3 ÷ 23 = 30. Businesses use this fraction when working out the GST they can claim back on receipts.

When do I need to register for GST?

You must register once your turnover has gone over, or is expected to go over, NZ$60,000 in a 12-month period. Below that, registration is optional, though some small businesses register to claim back GST on their costs. Once registered, you charge GST on your sales and file regular GST returns with Inland Revenue.

What does GST exclusive mean?

GST exclusive means the price before tax has been added. If a builder quotes NZ$3,000 plus GST, the final bill will be NZ$3,450. GST inclusive is the opposite: the tax is already inside the number you see. Shelf prices for consumers are normally inclusive, while trade quotes are often exclusive.

Is this GST calculator New Zealand tool free and private?

Yes. The tool is free, needs no sign-up and runs entirely in your browser. The amounts you type are not sent to a server or stored, apart from your light or dark theme choice, which stays on your own device. You can also print or copy any result for your records.

Does GST apply to everything in New Zealand?

No. Most goods and services carry 15% GST, but exports are usually zero-rated and some supplies, such as financial services and residential rent, are exempt. Sales by businesses that are not GST-registered also do not include GST. If you are unsure how a particular sale is treated, check with Inland Revenue or an accountant.
